Community School Director Uses Monthly “Brain Breaks” Boost Stamina
In Staten Island, Cheryl Marks is using interactive games and incentives to keep freshman engaged.
At Staten Island’s Curtis High School, Community School Director Cheryl Marks has been helping to coordinate monthly “Brain Breaks” that build stamina in freshmen. Wednesdays are strenuous days for students and teachers who have fully synchronous schedules. Working in teams of two, the community school staff virtually support lessons about college choices and mental wellness. Then interactive games and incentives, such as a live Zoom DJ or a Kahoot Trivia party, provide “Brain Breaks” that boost engagement and give students a mental break from their rigorous schedule.
